A refined and unscrupulous plan of revenge, starring Micaela Ramazzotti and directed by yet another super cool female Italian director, Giorgia Farina. We loved her last comedy, Amiche Da Morire, and this one looks even better.

At just 20, she gave the stunning performance of a grieving sister in La Stanza Del Figlio (The Son’s Room), and 2 years later as Giorgia in La Meglio Gioventù (The Best of Youth), Jasmine Trinca is all grown up now with a career more amazing than ever.

La Stanza Del Figlio

La Stanza Del Figlio

Born in Rome, she never took an acting class, married her college sweetheart, and cultivated a carefully managed and meaningful career, taking roles that were not always box office successes, but always critically acclaimed and full of integrity.

La Meglio Gioventu’

If you haven’t yet seen La Stanza Del Figlio or La Meglio Gioventù, why not? La Stanza Del Figlio won the Palme D’or at Cannes and a whole lot of other awards, and La Meglio Gioventù is practically “Contemporary Italian Film 101″, originally a TV mini-series that tells the epic story of two brothers over 4 decades.

Italian filmmakers are beginning to see the fun and the value in tweeting.

When we first started watching for Italian directors and actors on Twitter, it wasn’t a very exciting endeavor. Most didn’t tweet at all and the ones who did either did it rarely or tweeted political stuff we didn’t get.

That’s changing.

It’s not like we want you to go all Kardashian on us, Italians, like Kim with her 18.9K mind-numbing tweets; we don’t care what you had for breakfast or what you are wearing today. But we DO want to hear about your new projects.

The I Love Italian Movies Twitter List, ‘Follow The Stars’ has 81 members, some who are actors and directors, some just really great fan sponsored, and some are film accounts.

First, make sure you are following @Italian_Movies, and then FOLLOW THE STARS.

Particularly interesting follows right now:

What do Laura Bispuri, Giorgia Farina, Francesca Archibugi, Alba Rohrwacher,  and Micaela Ramazzotti have in common?

They’re all women, and they’re all ON FIRE.

Check out these three films from directors Laura Bispuri, Giorgia Farina, and Francesca Archibugi.

Laura Bispuri’s ‘Vergine Giurata’ (Sworn Virgin), part of the Tribeca Film Festival lineup. Stars Alba Rohrwacher and will without a doubt turn heads in the USA. The film is the fascinating story of a “sworn virgin”, an Albanian woman that has taken an oath to live the rest of her life as a man.

Giorgia Farina’s ‘Ho Ucciso Napoleone’ (I Killed Napoleon) looks HILARIOUS, with Micaela Ramazzotti as a woman scorned and out for revenge. It’ll be in Italian theaters TOMORROW!

And don’t forget Francesca Archibugi’s ‘Il Nome Del Figlio’ (An Italian Name), also starring Micaela Ramazzotti, as the woman who wants to name her son Benito. The birth of the baby in the film is actual footage of Micaela giving birth!

Happy Birthday to Barbora Bobulova, a Slovakian actress who has been starring in Italian films since the nineties.

The gorgeous and talented Bobulova can be seen these days in the United States in the award-winning Black Souls (Anime Nere). In this film, she’s Valeria, the rich housewife in Milano that doesn’t seem to care and/or want to know where all the money is coming from. In her mind she’s separated herself from the “crooks”, her relatives, that are doing her husband’s dirty work.

Barbora in 'Black Souls'

She was wonderful in Ivan De Matteo’s ‘The Dinner’, I Nostri Ragazzi, playing the “Barbie” wife of a guy who never seems to see eye to eye with his brother. When the brothers and their wives share a big problem, the friction between them all is intensified. The Dinner premiered at the Venice Film Festival and will be screened at this year’s Open Roads: New Italian Cinema at New York’s Lincoln Center.

Top Five Reasons To Pay Attention To Alba Rohrwacher Right Now

She’s got box-office appeal, unlimited acting ability, and the beauty of a Botticelli angel.

You should know Alba Rohrwacher, and here’s why:

1) She’s in EVERYTHING. She’s every director’s dream, taking difficult roles from the mentally unbalanced mom in Hungry Hearts, to the angry, sexually conflicted girlfriend in Via Castellana Bandiera, to the culturally imposed cross-dresser in Vergine Giurata.

2) And she’ll go to great lengths for a part. The already willowy thin Alba lost 20 pounds to play the anorexic loner in La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi.

3) She’s nominated for Best Actress for the Nastro D’Argento awards (for Hungry Hearts), and seems like a shoo-in to me since she also starred in Laura Bispuri’s Vergine Giurata; this is her year.

4) She’s already won a Best Actress award for Hungry Hearts, at the 2014 Venice Film Festival.

5) And there’s so much more to come, like Marco Bellocchio’s L’Ultimo Vampiro (which DOP Daniele Ciprì assures me is NOT a vampire movie).

Alba in Vanity Fair Le Meraviglie (The Wonders) Hungry Hearts Io Sono Amore (I Am Love) Cosa Voglio Di Più (Come Undone) La Solitudine Dei Numeri Primi (The Solitude of Prime Numbers) Verfine Giurata (Sworn Virgin) Tale of Tales Via Castellana Bandiera (A Street In Palermo) La Bella Addormentata (Dorment Beauty) Missione di Pace L'Uomo Che Verrà (The Man Who Will Come) Il Commandate e la Cicogna (Garibaldi's Lovers)

#8 She has no idea how famous she is!

When I told Sara how we all had seen and loved Salvo, she was genuinely surprised and delighted. “In America?”, she asked me? “People know me in America?” In the end, she says, “I don’t want to be famous. I just want to make great cinema.”

#7 She’s from Pescara

She left her family and her hometown of Pescara and arrived in Rome with nothing, but hard work paid off. She’s got a mom, dad, and older sister who is studying to become a doctor.

#6 She’s had a boyfriend for a year.

That’s all she’ll say.

She just delivered a knock-out punch to Sophia Loren; America, meet Margherita Buy.

Last week I interviewed director Cristina Comencini and when I asked her about casting her latest (adorable) comedy Latin Lover, she talked about how there were certain actors that she just always thought of immediately, hoping they are available. The late Virna Lisi was one of them, and Angela Finocchiaro, “Oh, and Margherita Buy, of course!”

Of course.

She’s appeared in dozens of films, but for me, she will always be Grazie, the holistic masseuse in Pane e Tulipani.

“Oh mio Dio, si è tutta bagnata mi dispiace. Cosa posso fare? Ah, le va una vodka?” (Oh my God, you’re soaked, I’m sorry! What can I do? Ah, do you want a vodka?), and with these words, Grazie and Rosalba became best friends forever, the girlfriends that I’d love to be third wheel to.

Marina Massironi was born in Legnano and was once married to the Giacomo of the famous Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo; together they formed  the comic duo “Hansel & Strudel”.

Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia: “It Was A Dark And Stormy Night In Sicily…”

$

The directors of Salvo are preparing a ghost story for us.

Piazza and Grassadonia have been tight-lipped about their new project but they’ve revealed a little to Cinecittà News.

Is it a ghost story? “It’s a Sicilian fairy tale with an important dark component”, Grassadonia told Cinecitta’s Cristiana Paternò. “The protagonists are two young people, in love, who are able to fulfill their dreams in the most unexpected way at the end of the film.

But will it be like a Hollywood ghost story with all kinds of special effects?

“No, the challenge is to bring the atmosphere of a fairy tale populated by ogres only accentuated by some characteristics of the location, of the characters, of the situations, but trying to do it in a minimalist way. The trick will be to bring out the emotions without the special effects that Garrone had to use.”

Salvo

Salvo

If you haven’t seen their first film, first of all, why not? Salvo is the remarkable first film from the duo, the story of the mobster, more lonely gunslinger than slick mafioso. Any joy he’s ever gotten from the proficiency of his chosen profession seems to have been sucked out of him. His landlords kowtow to him as if he is a king that might at any minute say, “Off with their heads!” but the convenience of having subservients at his beck and call to keep the cops off his back is expected, not appreciated.

So when Salvo arrives for a hit and finds his target’s blind sister, Rita, home alone, we really don’t see any clues as to why he doesn’t immediately whack her. She’s pretty? She’s blind? Whatever the reason for the mercy he shows her, it doesn’t extend to her brother. He does the job that he’s arrived to do, and then kidnaps Rita.

While in real life and in the movies women can be very bad to each other, we women would be in big trouble without our great girlfriends like these.

Gilda the prostitute from Giorgia Farina’s ‘Amiche Da Morire‘ didn’t even realize what a true friend she could be until she was forced into it, but I’d love a friend like her. Fearless, funny, and determined, if I ever have a dead body to dispose of, I hope I have somebody like her around. Gilda is played by Claudia Gerini, who would also be a fun friend to  have.

Don’t Mess With This Rebellious Spirit

Journalist Sara Faillaci had once showed up unannounced and without an appointment at Alba Rohrwacher’s mom’s farm house in Umbria looking to find out if the Rohrwachers were anything like the family in Le Meraviglie (The Wonders), so when she met Alba for a scheduled interview at Venice last year, the actress was not in the best of moods.

“You’re the one that went to my house”, Rohwacher asked Faillaci.

“Yes.”

“Is it true that you showed up there without any warning?” she asked, narrowing her eyes.

“Yes”.

“When I found out about that I was pretty mad.”

But in the end, Alba admitted liking the interview she’d done with her mom, and said that her home life had been well described, so she didn’t storm out.

Failaci asked Rohrwacher asked about her relationship with her sister, Alice, the director, and her parents: “I was always a rebellious spirit, and I wasn’t looking for shortcuts. I dealt with them in a direct, almost violent way. My sister Alice was more likely to go along, but sooner or later the chickens come home to roost. Happy Birthday To The Girl Most Likely: Greta Scarano

She’s beautiful, talented, very sweet, and she’s the NEXT BIG THING, so help me wish Greta Scarano a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I met her at last year’s Venice Film Festival at the debut of the sensational Senza Nessuna Pietà, directed by her boyfriend Michele Alhaique and also starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Adriano Giannini.

In it, Greta plays “Tanya” a young prostitute who has delivered to a by Mimmo (Favino), but he sees that she’s in trouble and comes to her rescue.

There’s a “beauty and the beast” quality to Mimmo and Tanya’s love story, as Tanya begins to care for him and then literally cares for him when he is punished for going against the family. They are an odd couple, but the chemistry is there and when they meet, you can see the relief in their eyes. In their “hard-knock lives, they’d never considered that they might find someone who actually want the best for them.

In the soon to be released (October 14)  Suburra, Greta stars again with Favino, and also Elio Germano in a story about Rome and the plans to develop the Roman water-front into a new Las Vegas. “Suburra” was the part of ancient Rome where all the criminals hung out and powerful people met with them.

His previous film, Il Principe Abusivo was not horrible; in fact, that’s what I titled my review. Il Principe Abusive: It’s Not Horrible. I don’t get why this guy is so very successful, but then again I don’t get why anyone goes to see an Adam Sandler movie either.

#8 Christian De Sica. Say what? Um, OK. I guess cinepanettone is more popular than I realized.

#9 Alessandro Gassman, is the son of Vittorio, but is making his own name in films like I Nostri Ragazzi, Il Nome Del Figlio, and Se Dio Vuole.

Luca Miniero

#10 Luca Miniero, the director of Benvenuti al Sud’s films have been much weaker ever since (like La Scuola Più Bella Del Mondo); never-the-less he’s in the top 10!

Paola Cortellesi is always on my list.

Paola Cortellesi is always on my list.

Notice all the testosterone on this list? There are only 6 women in the top 50 and 4 are producers, 2 actresses, Paola Cortellesi and Margherita Buy. A big congratulations to Olivia Musini (producer of Anime Nere) for making the list.

Margherita Buy, with more Best Actress awards than Sophia Loren.

“What you might see as depravity is, to me, just another aspect of the human condition.” Asia Argento

Tanti auguri Aria Maria Vittoria Rossa Argento, Asia Argento, as we know you. Daughter of Dario Argento, the Horror/Giallo king, Asia is her own girl, acting, singing, modeling and now, directing, and though growing up with her father’s slasher scripts as bedtime stories and acting in them at a young age may not have been ideal, she’s seems to have got it all in perspective now.

Her award-winning film InCompresa (Misunderstood) was selected to compete in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and it will open in the USA next week, September 26. Misunderstood  stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, is the story of a nine-year-old misfit, and is no doubt an attempt to portray her own “misunderstood” youth.
